Upon the acceptance of the resignation of long-time KYC board member Sonya Skan, the Ketchikan Youth Court board accepted the nomination of and elected Shawnda Johnson to the program's Board of Directors. Shawnda has been an active volunteer in KYC activities since her daughter, Torrance, became a bar association member earlier this year. We would like to offer a sincere thanks to Sonya for her years of service in the cause of restorative justice, and welcome Shawnda in her new role. We are grateful for the many parent volunteers, like Shawnda, who have helped our program over the years. They are an indispensable part of what we do!
Congratulations to our newest members of the Ketchikan Youth Court Bar Association! Superior Court Judge Trevor Stephens administered the youth court bar association oath to nine new youth who completed a rigorous 9-week training on all aspects of restorative justice and who all passed a bar examination before being submitted for swearing-in by Judge Stephens. Welcome to Pennie Andersen, Torrance Johnson, Porter Andersen, Tessa Salazar, Dylan Borer, Ashton Shotwell, Alyanna DelaCruz, Zoe Spencer, Owen Woodward, and Honorary Member Valerie Stanley. We are proud of all of you!
Ketchikan Youth Court is proud to welcome Austin Otos and Debb Robinson as new assistants in the youth court office. Austin was a long-time KYC member and employee who recently received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Austin has a keen interest in law and in the restorative justice model.
Debb is a long-time elementary and special education teacher who has vast experience working with children with social and emotional needs, as well as children who have experienced trauma. Her expertise and informed approach will be a real benefit to our clients. Welcome to Austin and Debb! Ketchikan Youth Court will be hosting classes for new members beginning in January, 2018. The classes are held one night a week for eight weeks, and culminate in members sitting for the KYC Bar Examination. Upon successful completion of the bar exam, new members are sworn in my Superior Court Judge Trevor Stephens and then begin courtroom training in real cases that are referred to KYC by Ketchikan District Court, Ketchikan Juvenile Probation, and Ketchikan Police Department. Interested persons are encouraged to contact the KYC office at 225-2293, or contact Program Director Glenn Brown by email at ktnyouthcourt@gmail.com.

Ketchikan Youth Court is pleased to announce that it has again been recommended for a grant by the Ketchikan City Council's Community Agency Grant Committee. The City Council has since approved the recommendation. We have been honored by the support we receive from the City and appreciate that our town sees the value in what we do. Additionally, when being considered for other grants from other governmental bodies as well as private non-profits, it is vitally important that they see community support for your endeavor. So, again, a big thanks to the City. We are humbled by your support.
After more than five years downtown in the Cape Fox Marketplace, we've moved our office back to the Plaza Mall at 2417 Tongass Avenue! WE are now on the second floor in Suite 210, directly above the AT&T store.
Ketchikan Youth Court was based in the Plaza for many years and relocated downtown during the summer of 2011. We'd like to thank our old landlord, The Cape Fox Corporation, for the years of support and generosity while we leased space in the Marketplace on Mission Street. And we'd like to express our sincerest appreciation to our new (and formerly old) landlord at The Plaza. Thanks also to the management of The Plaza for making us feel so welcome in our new home! Feels good to be back! The Ketchikan Youth Court Board of Directors conducted annual election sat its February mtg. We are proud to continue our work under the steady guidance of re-elected Board members Lanetta Lundberg, Sonja Skan and Susan Carson. And we are proud to announce the election of Sam McQuerry to our board of directors. Sam is the retired public defender in Ketchikan and brings to our board a wealth of criminal justice knowledge. We offer a big THANK YOU to Sam for his willingness to serve Ketchikan's youth in this way, and continue our debt of gratitude to Lanetta, Sonya and Susan for their continued service. If you see them around town, please offer your congratulations to them for their good work!
